本书是中世纪后期意大利有名政治家、历史学家尼科洛·马基雅维里（1469-1527）的代表作，1532年发表。作者不以一般的演绎法论述君主专制制度，而以归纳法总结了上自古希腊罗马，下至十六世纪他所耳闻目睹的君主统治的经验。以之献给当时的佛罗伦萨的国王洛伦佐-梅迪奇。作者实质上是资产阶级早期的一位杰出的思想家，他的这部著作后来发生了很大影响。
